Biker boss arrested for vicious beating
Thursday, April 18, 2002 The top Hells Angel in Manitoba has been arrested in connection with a vicious beating earlier this year at a west end bar.
The president of the Hells Angels Manitoba chapter, Ernest John Dew is charged with aggravated assault stemming from an incident on January 3 outside Bumpers Bar on Ellice Avenue.
Dew, along with other bikers, allegedly kicked and punched repeatedly a 36-year-old man. The assailants also allegedly beat the man with a claw hammer, causing serious cuts to his head and arms.
Police arrested Dew at his home on Wednesday morning, and he was released from custody on the condition he does not associate with any biker gang members.
Last week, police arrested four men linked to the Hells Angels, who are accused of a series of firebombings and other attempts to intimidate witnesses or police officers investigating the gang.
Three alleged members or associates of the Zig Zag Crew, a gang said to do grunt work for the Angels, and an alleged member of the Manitoba Warriors face a long string of charges in connection with the incidents that took place over the last eight months.
It has also been believed one of those arrested may have agreed to assist police in tying crimes directly to the Hells Angels.
The Angels have been operating in Manitoba on some level for about two years but there are still only about 10 full-fledged members.
