Recently, while working patrol, I noticed a subject riding down the
middle of the road on a ATV. The ATV was followed closely by a Hummer
and a Cadillac Escalade. The SUV's were blocking traffic to prevent
anyone catching up to the illegal SUV. After several minutes of creative
driving I managed to pull in front of the Hummer at a traffic light. As
I exited my squad to approach the operator of the ATV, I was immediately
blocked in by four SUV's. The Hummer and Escalade to my drivers side and
a Ford Explorer ahead of the ATV and Excursion parked behind my squad.
This position completely blocked the view of me and my squad from
passing motorists. Now standing near the ATV operator, my drivers side
squad door was blocked by the SUV preventing me from returning to my
squad. As quickly as these vehicles stopped in this position, I was
overwhelmed by ten gang members who encircled me. Thankfully, I had
called for assistance just prior to making the stop and a squad was
close by. I ordered the subjects to return to their vehicles and put the
ATV between me and the subjects. The subjects noticed a State Trooper
and another squad approaching and immediately got back into their
vehicles and split up, heading different directions.

This was obviously a practiced maneuver and one that these subjects
executed with precision. Had it not been for the other responding
squads, I believe their intention was to overpower me and subsequently
get the operator of the ATV away. This occurred two more times to a
State Trooper and a County Deputy also within the same weekend, while
this gang was visiting our area. Thankfully the officer safety message
that my department sent reached the County and State Patrol and backup
arrived within seconds of their traffic stops, scaring off the other
vehicles.

In sixteen years of LE, I have never seen anything like this and have
dealt with many different gangs to this tourist area. Just thought I
would past this along to the rest of you. Be safe...
